Suhr Standard Carve Top Custom Guitar, Lemon Honey

Music Store Live is proud to present this Suhr Standard Carve Top. We traveled up to John Suhr's shop and hand-selected all of the woods and appointments for this.

The spalted maple top has some wild figuring to it and the old cliche of "the pictures don't do it justice" really does hold true in this case. But to make it even more special, not only did we sift through all of their spalted maple to find this top, but we also had a very specific color in mind that we wanted for this guitar... It just so happened to be the same color that John Suhr was in the process of hand-mixing to use as his first color coat on the extremely rare and limited Aura guitars that he was building. With a small amount of begging, he agreed to make a little extra of that finish and allowed us to use it for this guitar. To my knowledge, this is the only Suhr guitar, other than the handful of Auras, that used this Lemon Honey color.

The Suhr Standard series of guitars represent the flagship of what John Suhr does at his shop. Add a beautiful and thick carve top to it and not only do you get a stunningly gorgeous guitar, but you are able to notice a bit more of the tonal impact that the maple has on the overall brightness of the sound. But it's well balanced out by the mahogany and rosewood that are also used as tonewoods throughout. The neck is slim and lightning-fast to maneuver around on. It also feels absolutely incredible under your hands. The natural and raw feeling of the mahogany is a real joy and will only get better and better over time. The overall build quality, excellent fretwork, and the recessed bridge combine to allow for super low action on this guitar. The Gotoh bridge is really stable and you can wail away on the trem as much as you want, your intonation will remain spot on and snap right back to where it needs to be.

We wanted to equip this beauty with some pickups that really emphasized how much you can get out of a simple 2-pickup build. The SSV and SSH Plus pickups sound amazing and do just that! They're hot enough to handle saturation and distortion while also having the versatility to clean up nicely. The bridge pickup has a little extra oomph to it for when you need to crank your tone up to 11. They're going to push the front end of an amp with some decent punch, but can also be mellowed out for warmer and more vintage tones. The African mahogany body on this one is chambered which both helps make the guitar a bit lighter (the carve tops tend to be heavier since there's more wood used for the body) but it also helps to keep the treble frequencies from being piercing and contributes to the beautiful tone of the guitar, as well.

Overall this guitar is a pure racehorse. The neck plays super fast and the tone is rich with some beautiful brightness and warmth to it thanks to the electronics and tonewoods combination.
