We're stoked to bring you another Wood Library exclusive run from our friends over at PRS! We took a little trip over to Maryland, and while there, we hand-selected the tops, backs, necks, fretboards, hardware, etc... basically every single detail of the guitar was painstakingly chosen for the perfect aesthetics, playability, and tone. This Custom 24 in Satin Angry Larry has a particularly unique quilt top.
The quilt maple top is mesmerizing and unique. We love quilt tops, and the entirety of it has a lot going on no matter where you look. We really dig how this one came out and really shines through the finish. We also chose a swamp ash body and flame maple neck, which both add some nice snap and brightness to the tone along with looking gorgeous. The African blackwood fretboard is tonally beautiful. It's actually the same wood that PRS used for the fretboards on the Private Stock Super Eagle guitars! It has the brightness of ebony with the fullness of rosewood. From top to bottom, and from front to back, there's no shortage of both ear and eye candy built into this guitar.
We pour a lot of passion into each guitar that we concoct with the PRS team. The goal is always to design instruments that are not only unique and look beautiful, but also sound absolutely phenomenal. This one fits the bill - it's definitely a lean, mean, shredding machine!
MANUFACTURER'S DESCRIPTION
The Custom 24 is the quintessential PRS guitar. This iconic instrument was the first model that Paul Reed Smith brought to the public at PRS Guitars’ first Winter NAMM show in 1985 and has been a top seller ever since. Played by internationally touring artists, gigging musicians, and aspiring players, the Custom 24 features PRS’s patented Gen III tremolo system and PRS 85/15 pickups with volume and tone controls and a 5-way blade switch. 85/15 pickups were personally designed by Paul Reed Smith to offer remarkable clarity and extended high and low end.
The Custom 24 is the original PRS. Since its introduction, it has offered a unique tonal option for serious players and defined PRS tone and playability.
It’s All in the Details: TCI-Tuned Pickups
Paul Reed Smith is known as a man who studies history, scrutinizes the details, and never stops applying what he learns to his own instruments. It is that passion, care, and tenacity that has permeated PRS Guitars’ culture and led to the constant evolution of PRS products. Last year, PRS announced TCI (tuned capacitance and inductance) pickups on the Paul’s Guitar. But, TCI is more than a pickup, it’s a process. That process has now been applied to all PRS pickups offered on our Core line of instruments, with the exception of a few artist Signature models.
“TCI stands for Tuned Capacitance Inductance. When you wind a pickup, the coils are capacitors, resistors, and inductors simultaneously. Our more refined ability to be able to tune those factors is what we have incorporated into TCI pickups,” said Paul Reed Smith. “To our ears, the results are very musical. We are very proud of how far we’ve come in the understanding and making of pickups. It’s been a fun process.”
