Player's Perspective
John Petrucci and Music Man have practically reinvented the electric guitar. This JP6 is one of their most successful collaborations. I'm always struck by how unique this model feels. It doesn't play like a Strat on steroids, and it doesn't play like every other high-octane shred machine on the market. It has a very distinct, dialed in feel that's a lot more comfortable than similar designs of the high-speed persuasion. The fretboard feels totally consistent in every register, the intonation is spot on and the strings bend easily and expressively without a hassle. Tonewise, we tend to think of this axe as a prog metal equipped shred machine. While that's certainly true, it can run pretty much the entire gamut of sound from molten leads to gentle, sparkling cleans. It's very much a "sell the rest of the collection" kind of guitar. This one's a must for the Petrucci disciple, but it's also simply a great axe for anyone who wants a guitar that'll hold up to anything and never hold you back.
Special Features
This JP6 sports an expansive but intuitive feature set. It's your typical decked out JP6 with an ebony fretboard rather than rosewood. This axe really shines in the electronics department. It has two powerful humbuckers from DiMarzio - a LiquiFire in the neck and a Crunch Lab in the bridge. There's also a piezo in the bridge that'll let you get great sparkling clean tones. There are two outputs: one for stereo magnetic/piezo blends (or just normal humbucking) and one for mono/piezo. High quality hardware, including Schaller M6-IND locking tuners, tops everything off.
