Player's Perspective

Music Store Live is proud to offer up yet another masterful creation from our friends over at Mike Lull Custom Guitars. After Mike passed away, he left the company to his son, Spencer, who is carrying on the family tradition of high-end, boutique basses built with care and a true passion for the art of instrument crafting. They also focus on keeping their instruments lightweight, without compromising any of the tone. They make sure it'll sound great in the studio, but also will be super comfortable to play when you're standing on stage with it strapped across your shoulder for hours on end. When the instrument is this easy and this comfortable to play, it makes it that much easier for it to just be an extension of you.

Chances are that, if you've listened to your fair share of bass players, you've probably heard someone rocking a Mike Lull bass. Mike's instruments are used by bassists in Cheap Trick, CCR, Pearl Jam, Heart, Death Cab for Cutie, Queensryche, The Aristocrats, and supporting artists such as Justin Timberlake, Rhianna, Mariah Carey, Bon Jovi, Allen Stone, Travis Tritt, Blake Shelton, Eric Johnson, Bruce Springsteen, Joe Bonamassa... the list goes on and on and on... The point is that Mike Lull's basses can be found on some of the biggest stages in the world supporting artists in virtually every conceivable genre. Country, pop, hip-hop, R&B, funk, classic rock, hard rock, fusion, blues, etc... Some of the most discerning players in the world choose these basses because they know that it will never let them down. They're made by players for players!

This is so much more than just a high-end copy of a traditional design. Hand-made in Washington, these basses are the cream of the crop.

This M5V Custom is basically a modern jazz bass on steroids. The Seymour Duncan single-coils are powerful and full of character but they still retain that j-bass vibe. They're custom wound just for the Mike Lull team and they sound fantastic. They are true single-coil pickups (not hum-cancelling) but everything in the instrument is extensively shielded and single-coil hum is extremely minimal. The only sound coming out of this bass is the sound that you want. In passive mode, they'll give you a great traditional J tone. Kick in the Bartolini pre-amp and explore some more modern sounds with the ability to boost and cut your bass, mids, and treble.

Known for their tight, punchy, and growly bass tones, Bartolini's preamps are an industry standard for good reason. This bass absolutely kills in any modern or vintage application, really. Our first thoughts were that this is perfect for soul, R&B, funk, gospel, and pop music. But the truth is that it can handle distortion really well, too, and you can play rock, and even metal with this very easily. It's extraordinarily versatile.

The build quality is thoroughly perfect. High-quality Hipshot ultralight hardware, a super lightweight yet perfectly balanced body, and spot-on immaculate fretwork really help to instantly clarify why these basses are worth what they are. The 35" scale length makes the B-string a thing of beauty. It's tight, punchy, and everything you've ever hoped for out of extending the range of your bass. The bass is just really very easy to play.

From top to bottom - this beast is an absolute tone monster!
