Player's Perspective

The L-2000 combines unmatched comfort with versatile, powerful electronics, creating one of the best all-purpose basses on the market. Making this even cooler is the throwback aesthetics to back when Leo Fender was first designing this model. The neck is slimmer than modern L-2000's. But what you'll immediately notice is the old-school G&L headstock (without the pointy horn on the bottom) and the old-school control plate. The bass sounds like an L-2000 through and through. The only changes are the aesthetics and the neck shape... But boy, it does look really cool and is a welcomed throwback to the L-2000's infancy. One could easily argue that G&L's legacy would not be what it is today if it weren't for the invention of this particular instrument.

The neck and fretboard feel incredibly smooth. Open-position grooves are easy, and the upper register is very forgiving on your playing hand. G&L uses a smooth, velvety finish on their necks, so the wood still feels like wood and will never glob up on you, even with the gloss finish. Tone-wise, this bass is a beast! It manages to provide seemingly unlimited sonic options and the pickups pump out some solid mid-range so you'll never get lost in a mix. The basswood body helps keep the weight super reasonable and the balance around your shoulders is perfect. The electronics in this are so strong that, frankly, this sounds no different than an alder + maple combination. But it does seem as though the basswood is very balanced. The original versions were usually well over 9 lbs (often close to 10), so this is a welcomed change.

The bass can be run in passive mode, active mode, or active with treble boost. There's also a series/parallel switch depending on if you want fat and thick or barky and growly sounds. You can dial in your exact sound and be as specific as you want, whether you play blues, metal, jazz, rock, or funk.

Special Features

When Leo Fender launched the G&L L-2000 bass in 1980, it was clear he was ready to make history all over again. Never before had such a wide range of tones come from a single bass, and throughout its evolution the iconic L-2000 has continued to win the hearts of bassists of every style and musical taste. This is designed to look like Leo's original L-2000's that he was building under the CLF (Clarance Leo Fender) Research name. This bass sports a CLF headstock shape, maple neck and fretboard with a gloss vintage tint, and a basswood body. Along with the headstock and neck shape, the knobs, control plate, and switches are all reminiscent of the original L-2000 basses built by Leo.

The foundation of the L-2000 is a pair of G&L Magnetic Field Design humbuckers backed by the flexible Tri-Tone control system, providing the sort of versatility that’ll let you find your tone no matter what kind of bass line you’re laying down. The Tri-Tone system features a trio of mini toggles for pickup selection, series/parallel signal routing and active/passive operation, as well as a trio of knobs for volume, treble and bass. With all that under the hood, Leo gave the L-2000 the kind of chops that’ll fit in any situation, from classic R&B to power-packed rock to poppin’ funk. What’s more, the L-2000 features an innovative Leo Fender-designed Saddle-Lock bridge to transfer string energy right into the body end-grain for an incredibly resonant instrument.
