F-Bass BN6 6-String Bass, Antique Brown

Music Store Live is proud to welcome F-Bass into our family of high-end and boutique basses that we now carry. Handmade in Canada, the build quality is absolutely out of this world. The meticulous attention to detail is immediately evident. The playability and tone on this one are just absolutely incredible.

The BN6 is their take on a modern, souped-up J bass that packs some serious punch and plays with a velvety smooth and luxurious feel. The tone is huge without getting in the way. The bottom end is powerful and ever-present, but it's also very tight and punchy. The top-end adds beautiful clarity and definition to the notes without being too piercing or shrill. There's a beautifully subtle natural mid-scoop to the sound, but you can also add that midrange right back in with the preamp of the bass. This bass would absolutely shine in the studio, where a producer could take the tone straight from the bass and not need to do anything else to it. It's also going to stand out and absolutely kill it on stage where you want a sound that is supportive of the band without getting in the way but it also gets you a bass tone that won't just get buried in the mix.

Each pickup has two single-coils which they stack on top of each other so that they are hum-cancelling even if you're just using the neck or the bridge on its own. J-bass on steroids would be a pretty good way to describe this. It's not going to be in-your-face aggressive or anything like that. If anything it's a more refined sound. It can stand out when needed, there's no doubt about that, and you can really make the bass bark or get it real snappy with just a few turns of the control knobs. If you need a traditional vintage J-bass tone, you can also get that with bypassing the preamp. This bass is an immensely versatile weapon to be added to any arsenal.

The neck feels absolutely incredible, as with every F-Bass we've had come through the shop so far. It feels like it basically plays itself. The B-string is thunderous, very powerful, and has great tension on it from the 34.5" scale length. We really like this as it feels just like a 34" scale bass and keeps your higher strings at the tension that they should be at while also adding just a touch more tension to your low B and E strings. It feels incredible and almost begs you to never put it down.

Every detail of the design is carefully calculated. That long upper horn that F-Bass uses helps keep the balance of the instrument absolutely perfect while it's on a strap. When all of the little details line up just right the result is incredible. Sometimes people wonder if an expensive instrument like this is worth it, but the care and attention that went into building this is immediately evident as soon as you pick it up and the answer becomes immediately crystal clear. 

For a real high-end and boutique feel, this absolutely checks all the boxes and then some. Every F-Bass that has come through our shop so far has been a total masterpiece and we instantly became huge fans of the work they're doing over there.

The BN series is the product of 40+ years of F Bass evolution. While it has roots stemming from the original Jazz Bass, it has slowly morphed into our signature sound, feel, and look. The BN series’ voice leans heavily on the wood choices and design of the instrument itself, with the electronics designed to simply enhance those attributes, rather than colour them. The F Bass pickups and preamp are natural & transparent though offer the flexibility of a modern active bass. The result is a big yet controlled bottom end, a rich punchy midrange, and a high end that is articulate yet sweet. We’re often asked how our BN series differs from our VF series—the BN is a bigger yet more refined and “polite” tone that can still get plenty aggressive when asked.
